Stick the dealer
When everyone passes the turned card and the other three pass again in round two, the dealer may not pass: the dealer must name a suit. Every hand is played.
What is stick the dealer?
In round two, when the other three players pass, the dealer may not pass: the dealer must name a suit as trump. pagat.com also calls it screw the dealer.
Which suits may the stuck dealer name?
Any suit but the one turned down in round one. Bicycle: “The rejected suit may not be named.”
Why do tables play it?
Every deal is played and someone scores. The Semi-Official page: “every time the cards are dealt, someone’s going to score some points.” pagat.com: it is often played when time is short.
Is stick the dealer in the official rules?
Not in the base rules of pagat.com, Bicycle or the Semi-Official page: there, when all four pass twice, the hand is thrown in and the deal passes to the left. pagat.com and the Semi-Official page describe it as a common variation, and the Semi-Official page calls it “a pretty good addition, but is kind of tough on beginners.”
Where is it played?
Across the US Midwest. Every league and tournament rulebook we found there plays it: Ohio’s tournament rules, the City of Plymouth in Michigan (“All hands are stick the dealer”), Chicago, Butler University in Indiana and the World Euchre Championship in Wisconsin. The Ontario Senior Games do not: a hand nobody makes is thrown in.
Can the stuck dealer go alone?
Yes. Naming trump makes the dealer the maker, and the maker may go alone, saying so when naming the suit.
